Our Story

old and new

Enoggera locals have been rolling for over 80 years

Enoggera Bowls Club History

Established in 1939. World War II was coming; however, 30 keen sportsmen were keen to keep playing the sport they loved. A gathering at the Enoggera Memorial School of Arts was convened, and the Enoggera Bowls Club was formed. The Club purchased “the sports ground” from the Estate of Robert Woods Thurlow, a businessman and politician in Brisbane, for a deposit of 115 pounds.

In the early days, uniforms were very formal – dresses had to be 3 inches below the knees.  Fewer women worked, and so more women played bowls together. Men played on the weekend- after working their 40-hour week.

Now, we welcome new generations of bowlers and support our vibrant local community. That legacy lives on as Pickering Place, which in 2019 became the new home of Enoggera Bowls Club. With the changing landscape of lawn bowls, Enoggera Bowls Club throws the doors open to welcome social and barefoot bowlers. Come down and experience the club with a game with friends.

Become a member, pop in for a few ends of barefoot bowls, catch up with friends and family, and host your function – the friendly atmosphere will make you feel at home.

Our teams play lawn bowls at many levels during summer and winter competitions.  With teams entering at all competition levels, there is a spot to suit your skills.

We are so proud of our current membership continuing to create new stories and success for the club we love.

We are presently a two-person team – Denise Stewart and Kay Smith. We are looking for the right third member. We need a community-minded person with financial skills- a Treasurer!

Our President and Secretary is Denise Stewart. Denise has 20 years of experience being on a volunteer board for a community disability organization. Denise brings her board experience, love of making sound decisions (Constitution and Policies), active community sports participation, work in occupational rehabilitation, and having a mum and dad who loved playing and talking about bowls.

Denise is new to bowls but feels like it’s in her genes. She loves learning new skills, starting at the bottom and working her way up.

“I have a clear vision of how Enoggera Bowls Club can enrich more people’s lives in our diverse community through bowls.

Kay Smith has been the secretary for some years and is now helping the MC by being the Club Treasurer.  Our Treasurer is perfectly supported by Greg Flynn, our long-time member and bookkeeper.

Kay is a good bowler- 2025 Women’s Single Club Champion! She comes with a sound understanding of competition bowlers’ needs and how our Club has operated over the last 14 years.

THIS YEAR

OUR CLUB SUPPORTS DIVERSITY and FAMILIES IN OUR COMMUNITY

Lawn Bowls is a game that can be played by people of all ages and with diverse interests and skills.

Our club is proud of our member who brings his Dad to play bowls together – despite Dad’s memory difficulties.  Dad enjoys getting his bowls close to the jack and the easy conversations with the other bowlers. Both men get their exercise in for the day- walking from one end of play to the next.  Playing bowls together has physical, social, cognitive, and well-being benefits.

Enoggera Club also has visitors who have cognitive impairments. With some lessons from our coach, people can play with their carer or support worker or join our Wednesday Pairs.

Reach out to discuss your social, physical, and recreational needs. We’ll work to connect you with the best bowls experience.

CPL – Choice, Passion, Life

Our club member, Stan Dunbar is often quietly gathering up the refundable bottles at the Club. The initiative by Stan enables us to assist raising funds for CPL by the recycling of bottles and cans collected. Patricia Gold of CPL recently acknowledged and thanked the club for continuing to support their charity organisation.

CPL – Choice, Passion, Life (formerly the Cerebral Palsy League of QLD) is a leading provider of integrated support, therapy & advice for people living with a disability in Queensland and Northern NSW.
